A Survivor

It all started when I heard a scream. My heart pounded against my chest and I was immediately woken up from my slumber. I ran to the sound of my Mother yelling in fear. She grabbed me before I could even comprehend what was going on. Leading me towards the front door of our house, I heard an explosion go off.

"There's a fire," my Mother said startled.

We rushed out of the building in a panicked state. There was a fire in the home I grew up in. I looked down at my hands. They were shaking. Calm down, I thought to myself. I can't possibly imagine how my Mother must feel. After all, she was the one to find the fire to begin with.

We waited impatiently for the fire truck to arrive. As I stared at the childhood home I have grown to love, I wondered the worst of things. What would have happened if my Mother hadn't woken up and found the fire? A news headline popped to my mind. "Girl, 17 and Mother die from a fire."

I was never the lucky girl. I never got lucky with guys, or friends. But, for once in my life, I finally felt like the lucky one. I escaped death. How many people can actually say that? I had always heard of situations similar to this, but never would have once thought that I would be the one to experience it. I was a survivor.

I watched the fire truck finally pull up my driveway. The lights blinded me. Multiple firefighters rushed into the building with fire hoses. It was a scene I never thought I'd witness, let alone experience. One particular thing that caught my attention was a woman firefighter. I remember her calling out orders in such a professional manner. She looked so brave as she led the other firefighters into the now burning building. She acted so effortless in such a dangerous situation. This woman inspired me. I was mesmerized at the scene that took place in front of me. It was as if it came straight out of a movie. That was the moment everything changed for me. That was the moment I decided that if I could be as fearless as this woman, nothing else matters.

I ran up to her. Her brown eyes stared right back at me.

"Were you not scared? " I asked curiously.

My question didn't take her off guard. She probably got this type of question all the time considering this job revolved around saving people and putting oneself into a dangerous situation. Her response was one that stuck with me till today.

"Oh sweetie," She chuckled. "Always remember to be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire."
